- For table service a tip of 15β20% is customary; at counter-service places tipping is optional.

This was my first time to Hobbyβs, and it was great! I ordered their classic #5: pastrami, corned beef, slaw, and Russian. Massive and delicious! And beyond that the staff were very kind and welcoming, maintaining an old school deli atmosphere. Will definitely be back the next time Iβm in Newark!

The pastrami is excellent, but it should be for a $20 sandwich. It's a great sandwich; only needs mustard on rye. At least the prices keep the crowd down. Pretty quick service, even at noon.

The Legend of the Pastrami vs. The Reality of the Onion Rings Having visited Newark multiple times with the intention of dining at Hobby's Delicatessen, I finally had the opportunity to try it. I ordered the pastrami sandwich and upgraded the standard fries to onion rings for an additional $2.50. The menu prominently highlights their pastrami as the "best pastrami in America." Naturally, that sets a high bar. Perhaps my expectations were elevated, but the execution did not quite stand out above the standard fare found at other traditional delis. Served under a substantial layer of melted cheese, the portion of pastrami was generous and certainly respectable, but it lacked the exceptional quality of the pastrami at Hershel's in Philadelphia's Reading Terminal Market. Unfortunately, the onion rings were a disappointment. They appeared to have been fried in older oil, leaving them greasy, devoid of any crispness, and lacking a proper crust. In hindsight, I regret opting for the upgrade. This element of the meal is primarily why I am rating the experience four stars instead of five. On a positive note, the ambiance was pleasant, and the complimentary assortment of pickles and cucum

Hobby's Delicatessen was recently highlighted on television, so I wanted to try it myself. When I arrived around 11:30am, there were a few customers and I was warmly greeted enthusiastically by Kim (employee for 22-years...wow!) and showed me where to sit at Table #13...and she suggested that I sit where I was facing the front door. I ordered their turkey sandwich, onion rings, and a diet soda. As you can plainly see by the photos, the oversized portions were positively breathtaking...AND delicious. The onion rings were the best I have ever had. The owner even stopped by my table to see how I was enjoying everything, which I enthusiastically gave it a positive rating. A restaurant who has long-term employees, such as Kim, speaks volumes about the kind of employer Hobby's is - thank you for taking care of your staff. A shoutout to the behind-the-scenes kitchen cooks - great job and it is noticed and appreciated. Grade: A+
